A Reality Coach builds their coaching on the framework for human behavior and change based on Choice Theory.

Core concepts of Choice Theory important for the Reality Coach include:

  • The only person I can control is myself.
    • I am responsible for my own decisions and actions, no one else.
  • We have a choices -- that includes not only the choice of what we do, but what we think, and how we feel.
    • Yes you read correctly.  Emotions are a choice.
  • Why doesn't matter.
    • When you are stuck on the side of the road with a flat tire, it is fruitless to spend your time looking for the nail, analyzing the physical composition of the nail and trying to figure out exactly when and where you ran over it.
  • Solutions are in the present and the future.
    • You can't change the past, though you can learn from it.
